For the first time ever, a transgender woman will compete for her country in the Miss Universe pageant, with Angela Ponce having been crowned as Spain’s representative. She was crowned the main winner at the grand finale of Miss Universe Spain 2018 amidst much pomp and fanfare.
Angela defeated 22 other competitors to be crowned at the finale in Tarragona. Her win comes six years after the competition ended a ban on transgender contestants, after previously requiring all contestants be “naturally born” women.
Ponce had previously competed in Miss World Spain in 2015, but failed to take that title. Post her win at the pageant she said, “I want to give a lesson to the world of tolerance and respect towards oneself and towards others.”
In 2012, the Miss Universe Organization allowed transgender contestants to compete in the international pageant. “I have the regional crown on my head and I will keep fighting to make us seen, to make us heard and to demonstrate that I am already a queen with my own crown said the newly crowned winner in one of her recent interview.
